Hello, I’m Buddy Blackman with 7 Branch Arena. I wanted to write this post today to help explain a little about our challenges with our arena ground.
First of all, the land we purchased and built our arena grounds on was 100-year-old farm land. So, although we are in or close to the “Sand Hills”, our ground is not pure sand. Our arena ground is very organic DIRT. We have however, over the last 2 years, dumped about 30 trailer loads of red sand into the arena. This has helped it but it is still probably 80% nice, soft DIRT.
We have been complimented numerous occasions about how great our arena ground is ! In the right weather conditions, and with help from the local fire department….. our arena ground is nice.
However, our arena (80% dirt), does not take heavy rain well. All of our land is FLAT and water does not have anywhere to run. Because our arena is dirt……it does not allow the water to drain very well. Unlike “ALL SAND” arenas…… sand arena’s allow the water to drain and you can mostly recover an arena in a day, after a big downpour.
I believe, in the right conditions, our arena is much better to run in ….. than an all sand arena. Think of yourself, running a mile at the beach in the sand. When it downpours at the beach….. there is never standing water on the coastline sand…….it drains right through it.
Unfortunately, during the winter months, it makes it that much harder on us to recover the arena after a lot of rainfall. We don’t have 90 degree heat and sun to assist us.
We hate to CANCEL any of our planned events. We understand that you have to plan your weekends……and so do we. There is a lot of work that my family and friends have to do in order to put on a competition. So….. we also, do not like canceling our events.
We spend many hours and diesel fuel on the tractor trying to recover the arena for shows. We currently have been working for the last 3 days trying to recover the arena for a show in December.
In closing, I hope you understand some of our challenges here at 7 Branch Arena. We try to make a nice place and put on a good organized show for our contestants.
We are trying to finalize our plans for 2015 and have some great ideas we are thinking about.
Hope to see you soon.
